According to the decision of the jury – consisting of Umbigo, the Casa de Mateus Foundation, the Millenium bcp Foundation, Mariana Pestana and Leonor Carrilho – among the various eligible applications, Jiôn Kiim's proposal stood out for its research into the expanded field of drawing.
The artist, whose work often stems from observations of her surroundings, proposes to explore the intersection between tradition, cultural heritage and the natural environment of Vila Real with her personal narrative, thus ensuring a dialogue between different contexts and the experimental possibilities offered by the artistic residency in terms of research into the territory and heritage of the Casa de Mateus Foundation. Her proposal also ensures an open materialisation – an important condition in the evaluation of applications – which can greatly benefit the final formalisation and construction of the work.
Jiôn Kiim (Busan, South Korea, b. 1982), represented by Galeria Presença in Portugal, graduated in Fine Arts from the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts (HfBK Dresden) in Germany, studied Installation Art as a guest student at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste Stuttga and participated in the Contemporary Artistic Practices programme at the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto as an Erasmus student. She also graduated in Industrial Design, specialising in Space and Product Design, from Hongik University in Seoul. She has had several solo exhibitions and many other group exhibitions.
The artist will now have at her disposal a considerable wealth of knowledge, techniques and materials, which may dictate new directions in her research and artistic practices, and she will also be able to take advantage of the territorial integration promoted by the Casa de Mateus Foundation.
Umbigo and the Casa de Mateus Foundation would like to thank the juries and all the artists who participated in this open call, wishing everyone the best of luck for the future.
