Transitional justice is traditionally viewed through the lens of legal and institutional frameworks designed to address human rights violations in the wake of conflict or repression. However, within a European context, whose global entanglements are currently marked by multiple and overlapping crises, ranging from rising nationalism and democratic backsliding to climate-induced displacement and systemic discrimination, the limitations of purely judicial efforts are clear.
To address these failures, AFIELD, Arts of the Working Class, and Framer Framed launch the Transitional Justice with Artists (TJA) Grant, with applications open until May 2.
Inspired by legal scholar Ruti Teitel’s concept of transitional justice—defined as a full range of diverse processes and mechanisms used by a society to address massive past abuses—the TJA recognizes the role of communities as active witnesses, contributing to the documentation of injustices and the development of new forms of reparation.
The program is intended for artists, cultural professionals, and key members of initiatives based in Europe who work with communities affected by serious human rights violations. It values the experiences of victims and survivors and promotes practices that contribute to truth-seeking, the preservation of memory, environmental, economic, or cultural reparations, and institutional reform.
Each fellow will receive €10,000 (€9,000 in funding and €1,000 for travel and living expenses), join AFIELD’s international network—comprising more than 140 artists—and contribute an article to the journal 'Arts of the Working Class', which has a circulation of over 70,000 copies. The grant also includes a residency at Framer Framed (Amsterdam) and regular online meetings over the course of six months. The six participants will be divided into two groups of three fellows: the first group from July to December 2026 and the second from May to October 2027.
Eligible applicants must be legally resident in an EU Member State or a country associated with the Creative Europe program (including individuals with refugee status or asylum seekers), be part of initiatives that have been active for at least two years, and demonstrate direct involvement with a specific community, as well as a willingness to participate in all components of the program. Purely commercial initiatives, academic research projects without community involvement, or initiatives in the early stages will not be considered.
The call is limited to the first 500 applications, and early submission is recommended. Further information can be found here.
