2026 marks the celebration of the tenth anniversary of MAAT – Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology, a museum opened to the Tagus River, mirroring a wave that surges along the banks of Lisbon's riverside area, on October 5, 2016. It is an architectural landmark and a museological and museographic challenge, seeking to articulate an industrial heritage with a spatiality of curved lines, atypical in the Portuguese architectural landscape. Amanda Levete's building has established itself as an architectural icon, bringing challenges to the exhibition of works and creating new experiences for the fruition of art, thanks to a sector now inseparable from social media culture and mass tourism.
The program launched on November 20th reflects the trajectory of these ten years, with over a hundred exhibitions, three directors, and numerous acquisitions made during this period, expanding the list of names present in the EDP Foundation's collection. While not capable of writing the history of contemporary art in Portugal, as director and curator João Pinharanda points out, it still constitutes an important and indispensable collection.
Highlights for 2026 include exhibitions of the EDP Foundation Art Collection, divided into two chapters and the most extensive exhibition of works comprising this collection to date; exhibitions by Anna Maria Maiolino and Christian Marclay, the two major solo shows; and projects by Pedro Cabrita Reis, Paulo Furtado (with Yolanda Correia and Eduardo Brito), and Margarida Correia. And finally, the exhibition Energies of AI, curated by Antonio Somaini, featuring works by Hito Steyerl, Kate Crawford & Vladan Joler, Trevor Paglen, Grégory Chatonsky, and Fabien Giraud.
The biggest surprise, however, will be the special edition of the New Artists Award (with an exhibition scheduled for 2027) and the unveiling of the EDP Foundation Art Grand Prize – two of the most prestigious awards in the Protuguese scene, which have catapulted and given visibility to young artists, on the one hand, and, on the other, cemented the careers of artists with significant relevance in Portugal.
The 2026 program is curated by João Pinharanda and Sérgio Mah. Additional information, as well as the complete program and a list of initiatives and partnerships, will be promptly indicated on the MAAT website.
