On 22 October at 6.00 pm, the PLMJ Foundation Auditorium will host an event on the Folklore Project, a transdisciplinary artistic initiative originating in Vardø, in the far north of Norway.
The project stems from research carried out by Andrea Barros into the impact of the Steilneset Memorial, designed by the Swiss architect Peter Zumthor and the Franco-American artist Louise Bourgeois, in collaboration with the Norwegian historian Liv Helene Willumsen. This memorial, situated on the island of Vardøya in Norway, stands as a poignant testament to lives marked by intolerance and fear, paying tribute to the 91 victims of the 17th-century witch trials. In this context, The Folklore Project investigates the relationships between the memorial, Zumthor’s architecture and Bourgeois’s work, seeking to understand how different artistic expressions can engage with memory and history.
In 2025, the project culminated in an artist residency in Vardø, which brought together five female artists and researchers from different fields: Andreia Garcia (architectural theory), Fernanda Fragateiro (visual arts), Haley Fohr (music), Jenny Osuldsen (landscape architecture) and Maggie Wright (art history and director of the Easton Foundation / Louise Bourgeois Archive). The event at PLMJ begins with a presentation of the project, followed by a conversation between Maggie Wright, Executive Director of The Easton Foundation & Louise Bourgeois Archive, and Nuria Enguita, Artistic Director of MAC/CCB. Drawing on the work and legacy of Louise Bourgeois, the conversation will explore the relationships between art, architecture, women and memory.
This will be followed by a screening of the documentary (15 minutes long) filmed during the residency in Vardø, which documents the creative process of the resident artists and researchers.
The programme concludes with a conversation between Maggie Wright and the sculptor Fernanda Fragateiro, both of whom took part in the artist residency held in Vardø as part of The Folklore Project. The conversation will be moderated by Cláudia Delgado, who, together with Manuela Wirth, is developing the project The Forgotten Her Story, dedicated to the stories of women whose creativity and legacy are at risk of being forgotten.
The conversations will take place in English and the documentary will be presented mainly in English, with English subtitles. Admission is free, subject to registration.
