Umbigo #93 looks forward with hope, discovering regenerative processes as an opportunity to restore balance not only among the various spheres of Nature but also within communities.
Instead of the usual exhibition format, the new issue features a dossier showcasing several case studies where art plays a crucial role in catalysing practical and tangible projects. These initiatives are local but possess the potential for global impact, demonstrating a new, inclusive, and ecological approach. Examples range from the Svalbard Seed Bank and the Quinta Rego Água agroforestry system to the Guardiões do Mira and the Guarda Rios collective. These cases illustrate how communities are taking charge of ecological practices and actively implementing them. The dossier also features the work of Amar Kanwar, as well as the Walk&Talk and MOMENTUM biennials. Additionally, it highlights the Green Art Lab Alliance organisation.
The covers for Umbigo #93 were created by Ana Silva (art project supported by Vasco Collection) and Denilson Baniwa. Both artists approach their work through an ecological, ancestral, and postcolonial lens. Silva's artwork prominently features toxic remnants from the Global North, using plastics and discarded clothing to examine the role of women in contemporary Angolan society. In contrast, Baniwa's work is rooted in Amazonian traditions, focusing on the construction of history and the archive.
Also on the magazine, written essays by Álvaro Domingues, Renny Pritikin, Mar Vallejo and Pedro Gadanho; visual essays by Frederico Vicente with Matilde Travassos, Luís Rocha, Cristina Lamas and the non-profit organisation for the traditions of the peoples of the Peruvian Amazon, Shipibo Conibo Centre; and a major interview with Ritó Natálio and Denilson Baniwa, within the scope of the Terra Batida residency.
In the commissioned projects, Letícia Costelha in Exchanges (FLAD); Isabelle Ferreira (MAAT) and Zanele Muholi (Serralves Foundation) in Extensions. The #2 of the Landscapes project was led by the Syrian artist exiled in Paris, Sara Kontar.
Also, the usual sections: João Silvério highlights the works of Luís Palma and Susana Anágua from the PLMJ Foundation collection; Atlanti_a is the featured artist in UmbigoLAB, presenting three pages of their artistic project; the poem is by Raquel Nobre Guerra; and Tamara Kalo is the artist featured on the back cover.
