Following the last artistic residency organised in partnership with the Fundação da Casa de Mateus, UmbigoLAB announces a new Open Call in partnership with Loulé Municipal Council/ Loulé Criativo, to be held at the entity's facilities from 26/01/26 to 06/02/26 (1st phase) and from 30/03/26 to 12/04/26 (2nd phase).

The UmbigoLAB @ Loulé Criativo residency aims to broaden the reach of the UmbigoLAB platform, founded in 2018 with the support of the Millennium bcp Foundation, affirming its versatility in the contemporary art scene. The aim is not only to create a new dynamic for exhibition, dissemination and communication, but also, in this context, to provide a new incentive for creation.

UmbigoLAB will consider eligible any artist/artist duo whose registration in this role is active on the date of submission of the application, regardless of age, gender, nationality, place of residence and date of registration on the platform, excluding any artist/artist duo who, although complying with the above, has already participated in another Loulé Criativo artistic residency.

The artistic project to be presented must be designed to integrate the knowledge of the Master Craftsmen, as well as the techniques and materials of Palma and Esparto. The work will be carried out by the resident artist/artist duo with the collaboration of the Master Craftsmen after training sessions. Artists or artist duos wishing to apply must submit an artistic project to UmbigoLAB by 30 November that takes into account the specific context of this residency.

As was the case with the previous UmbigoLAB @ Loulé Criativo, the selection of the winning artist or artist duo will be made by a jury set up for this purpose. In the case of this Open Call, the jury will be composed of: Filipa Oliveira, Caio Marcolini, two members of the promoting entity (representing Umbigo/Fundação Millennium bcp) and two members of the host entity (representing the Loulé City Council/Loulé Criativo).

BIOGRAPHY

José Pardal Pina has been the Associate Editor of Umbigo since 2018. Education: Integrated Master's in Architecture from Instituto Superior Técnico, Universidade de Lisboa; PG in Curatorship from Faculdade de Ciências Sociais e Humanas, Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Curator of the Dialogues (2018-2024) and Landscapes (2025-) projects in Umbigo.
