Umbigo #94 is now available in kiosks and on the webstore.
The new Umbigo #97 is now on newsstands, this time focusing on Love. It does not set out to be an encyclopaedic issue that scrutinises all possible definitions of a theme that can be a feeling, a concept, or an action, platonic or carnal. Rather, the magazine is a place of sharing and affection, in the polyphony that characterises contemporaneity. Above all, it is an edition that seeks to rehabilitate love as a social, political, and solidarity-based driving force.
The covers, back covers, and Art Projects for this issue are by Ana Vidigal and Soeun Park, two artists from different geographies and generations who highlight the female voice, identity, and memory in their works, despite following radically different practices. Profiles by Maria Brás Ferreira and Orsola Vannoci Bonsi. The Curatorial Project was overseen by Filipa da Rocha Nunes, who finds in friendship the foundation for the exhibition, which can also be read as an ode to love for the artists and their dedication to art.
Written essays by Adriana Veríssimo Serrão, Colin Ginks, Daniel Cardoso, Francisca Salema, José Pardal Pina, Maria Inês Mendes, Nuno Alexandre Ferreira, p. feijó, Camila Lobo, and finally Renny Pritikin. Visual essays by Isa Toledo, Duda Affonso, Elisa Azevedo, and Annie Sprinkle + Beth Stephens.
In the commissioned projects, Vera Midões signed the Drawing Project – Carmona e Costa Foundation; Sofia Rocha signed the FLAD Exchanges Project; and Gonçalo Preto was the guest artist for the Landscapes Project #6. Extensions were organised by CNAD as part of the Marcelino Santos exhibition, and by Contextile, which selected several of the works submitted to the Contextile 2026 International Competition – Textile and Contemporary Art Biennial.
The UmbigoLAB section features the work of two artists: Jiôn Kiim, regarding the UmbigoLAB x Fundação da Casa de Mateus residency in Vila Real; and Pedro O Novo, with an artistic project in the interior and a profile by Maria Inês Augusto.
Before that, João Silvério highlights the work of Ana Jotta and Francisco Trêpa in the PLMJ Foundation Collection; Livraria Aberta (Porto) selects a series of complementary readings for this edition; and Luísa Salvador focuses on Auguste Rodin’s Mains d’amants (1904). The poem is by Cláudia R. Sampaio.
And if things seem too parochial, let us sing, then:
“Selvaggio animale in calore Il cazzo che mi spruzza nel cuore Un muscolo rosso d'amore Affonda lungo il mio cuore”
Cicciolina, Muscolo Rosso, 1987
